Wind turbine bearings

As a clean energy source that does not produce carbon dioxide that can cause greenhouse effects, wind power is rapidly becoming popular in countries around the world.

Large scale wind turbines (windmills) are giant machinery, and many 2MW level wind power generation equipment currently under construction have wind turbine blades that are about 40 meters long, a rotating shaft height of 60 to 100 meters, and a total weight of no less than 200 tons. Therefore, the bearings used in windmills are inevitably large, with an inner diameter range of 100 millimeters to 700 millimeters. Some models require bearings with an inner diameter of nearly 2 meters. There are only six manufacturers in the world, including NSK, that can stably supply such large bearings to the market. The wind turbine industry is now developing globally, therefore, in addition to bearing manufacturing, it is also important to carry out marketing activities and technical services at major global outlets.

Wind turbine bearings are a special type of bearing that are used in harsh environments, have high maintenance costs, and require a long lifespan.

Main features:

Poor operating environment

High maintenance costs

Require high lifespan

In the operation of bearings, only a part of the rollers generally bear the load at the same time, and the area where these rollers are located is called the bearing area of the bearing. The size of the load borne by the bearing and the size of the operating clearance will have an impact on the load-bearing area. If the bearing area is too small, the rollers are prone to slipping during actual operation. For wind turbine gearboxes, if the main shaft design adopts a double bearing support scheme, theoretically only torque is transmitted to the gearbox. In this case, after a simple force analysis, it is not difficult to find that the load borne by the planetary carrier support bearing is relatively small, so the bearing bearing bearing area is often relatively small, and the rollers are prone to slipping.

In the design of wind turbine gearboxes, planetary support bearings are generally supported by two single row tapered bearings or two full roller cylindrical bearings.

We can improve the load-bearing area by appropriately pre tightening tapered roller bearings or reducing the clearance of cylindrical roller bearings.
